The digestive fires are the alchemical furnace of the body, and we can see in all indigenous and traditional cultures the bitter herbs taken to maintain that fire, and to purify the blood and detox the deep layers of waste in the intestinal wall. Our path into herbalism was not from interest, hobby or financial gain, but foisted upon us by our path and calling in that initiatory process of actual illness and disease. The western and modern suppressive symptom management with harmful drugs or invasive surgeries and dire diagnoses culminated in the hermit’s healing and studying with living treasures and masters in the unyielding quest for spiritual, mental and physical health. This radiant health was achieved through fasting, especially a qi gong-based energetic fasting technique known as bigu. Now one need not take this to the extreme, but fasting is very beneficial as is caloric restrictions in general. The tonic fasting herbs that help maintain the basic human processes are best taken with a proactive herbal bitters, and most of the ones on the market from China are mixes of patent formula with cheap herbs and preservatives. This is a sad state of affairs for many studying Traditional Chinese Medicine and is the reason why we have not carried a traditional Daoist formula for this because the herbs are rare if quality, and the process takes a long time to make. We were finally able to track down the master for this Daoist digestive tonic, and it’s made in a slow traditional way with a proprietary blend of formula. This is best taken for a few months, with a break of one week per month. This is a great formula for men and women and fasting or just for general detox. It is considered a superior liver cleansing formula, and the liver performs many important functions in the body, including the detoxification, filtering, regulating and storage of blood. It is also important in the process of metabolizing food, and in the regulation of hormones. As with any detoxification herbs that mobilize toxins, one can feel headache, groggy, loose or “potent” bowel movements but these can be the toxins releasing and is known as the Herxheimer Reaction, a short-term (from days to a few weeks) detoxification reaction in the body. As the body detoxifies, it is not uncommon to experience flu-like symptoms including headache, joint and muscle pain, body aches, sore throat, general malaise, sweating, chills, nausea or other symptoms.*
